    "Get the Cure"

    Promoting cured adhesive installations

WET glue doesn' t do the job of DRY glue.

A safe windshield replacement isn't like a drive through coffee or burger.

Take the time to allow for a safe cure so that your vehicle is roadworthy and crashworthy.

The lives of you and your loved ones may depend on it.

  •

Welcome to our world of safe auto repairs.

Not all auto repair shops are created equally.

Imagine leaving a windshield replacement shop that did a "drivethrough" repair and suffer an unfortunate crash and your windshield falls out.

"WET" windshield adhesive doesn't do the job of "CURED" adhesive.

To suggest it does is dishonest and could endanger the lives of you and your loved ones.

    WINDSHIELD SAFETY

Your windshield helps deploy your airbag by deflecting it back towards you. Your windshield adds roof support in a rollover. It also helps keep the occupants safely in the vehicle and spares them from being ejected.

Please take a minute and watch the video in the left margin that explains the safety role cured adhesive plays in customer safety.

THE FIRST 3 REASONS WHY WE PROMOTE CURED ADHESIVE WINDSHIELD INSTALLATIONS ARE:

    1) FOR THE SAFETY OF DRIVER AND OCCUPANTS.

    2) NO WATER LEAKS OR WATER DAMAGE TO INTERIOR.

    3) NO TIME LOST WITHOUT YOUR VEHICLE TO FIX WARRANTY CLAIMS FOR LEAKS.

*WET ADHESIVE DOES NOT DO THE JOB OF CURED ADHESIVE*, TO SUGGEST IT DOES IS DISHONEST AND A DANGER TO YOUR LIFE.

Questions you should ask when having your windshield replaced.

These are the questions driving the safety conversation forward.

1 What are the safe driveaway times after a windshield installation?

2 How does time, temperature and humidity effect safe driveaway times?

3 Where do we go to find out what the real cure times are for auto glass adhesives?

4 To what crash test standard is your auto glass technician installing to?

5 What brand of auto glass adhesive is being used to bond the windshield to the body of your vehicle?

6 Is the auto glass adhesive being used crash tested on the exact model and colour* of vehicle it is being used to repair?

7 What level of safety do you expect from your auto glass technician?

In our study we found that most auto glass shops install to the lowest crash test standard. The lowest crash test standard is done at 30 mph/48kph and is not indicative of a real life car crash at highway speeds.

Including the time that it takes to install a new windshield, most auto glass shops are confident in releasing a vehicle back into service after only being in the service bay for a total of 2.5 hours.

The main cause of this, is a lack of real training and voluntary standards. Further worsened by technicians relying on advertising based information rather than on real technical data to determine safe curetimes..

In other words, they trust the general information printed on the tube and do no independant investigation of their own.

A safe OEM type auto glass installation would typically include a 24 hour period for curing alone, at 72 degrees F and at 50% Relative Humidity.

With 24 hours cure, most vehicles will pass the most stringent of crash testing, the FMVSS216 Roof Crush test which best simulates a roll over type crash.

By having this conversation we can educate both the motoring public and the people replacing windshields.

    * Colour is important because we are bonding painted metal surfaces together. Therefore, the paint the adhesive must bond to must be tested also. As a major supplier of OEM auto glass adhesive to the aftermarket, DOW Automotive has done all the testing of it's adhesive on every make and model of vehicle and the many colours of paint those vehicles are available in.

Institute for Auto Glass Technology - IAT

In order to research the OEM method of windshield installation at the factory level, I undertook a lengthy process of confirmation and verification of reliable technical data and the professionals that stood behind the data.

As Program Director and founder of the IAT, I engaged the OEM supplier for urethane adhesive for most of the vehicles assembled in North America.

The best policies and practices of the OEM urethane manuafacturer were adapted into a comprehensive training programme for the auto glass replacement market.

This training program went on to be the working draft for the Apprenticeship Branch of the Ontario Government as I sought to make the trade of Auto Glass Technician, a fully licensed trade.

The major auto glass chains in Ontario Canada all voted down a mandatory examination for licencing and conspired to keep the trade as a voluntary certified trade.

Valet Auto Glass Repair and Replacement Systems

Corporations that manufacture windshield adhesive, refuse to publish the time it really takes their product to get to a safe cure and to be crashworthy to the highest standards.

Instead, publish the time their glue takes to pass the least of all crash tests.

As a result, people are unknowingly endangering theIr lives when they drive their vehicle with wet glue.

Failed airbag deployment and deflection, roof crush and occupant ejections from the vehicle are just some of the risks.

In order to pass a roll over test, the OEM polyurethane standard is a 24 HOUR CURE at room temp and 50% RH.

    "Get the cure"

The sufficent cure time to reach 500 psi in bonding strength for the North American OEM urethane adhesive is,

    24 HOURS @72F AND @ 50% RH.

An aftermarket product by the same manufacturer claims to reach 500 psi in 5 hours at specified conditions.

Other aftermarket auto glass adhesives makes claims of shorter safe driveaway times.
